Advantages of Meta tags:

  • Meta tags can help search engines understand the content of a webpage, which can improve the page's visibility in search engine results.
  • Meta tags can be used to control how a page appears in search engine results, such as by specifying a page's title and description (W3Schools, 2022)..
  • The <meta name="robots"> tag can be used to control how search engines crawl and index a webpage (Moz, 2022).
  • The <meta name="viewport"> tag can be used to control how a webpage is displayed on mobile devices (W3Schools, 2022).
  • The <meta name="keywords"> tag can be used to specify keywords related to the webpage's content, which can help search engines understand the page's topic  (Moz, 2022).

Disadvantages of Meta tags:

  • Some search engines do not give much weight to meta tags, and may not use them to determine a page's relevance or ranking (Moz, 2022).
  • Some webmasters may stuff their pages with keywords in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings, which can lead to penalties or lower visibility in search engine results (W3Schools, 2022).
  • The <meta name="keywords"> tag is less used by search engines and is considered less important than other tags in terms of SEO  (Moz, 2022).

To overcome the disadvantages of Meta tags, it is recommended to:

  • Use meta tags appropriately, providing accurate and relevant information about the page's content (Moz, 2022).
  • Avoid keyword stuffing, using only relevant and natural keywords (W3Schools, 2022).
  • Use other SEO techniques in addition to meta tags, such as optimizing the page's content and structure, building backlinks, and promoting the page on social media  (Moz, 2022).
  • Keep in mind that meta tags are not the only factor that search engines consider when ranking pages, so focus on providing high-quality content and user experience (Moz, 2022).
